Very rarely do we conduct a re-post of tournament events on this site, but this time around called for special circumstances.
Ah...the innocence of childhood.
How quickly those days evaporate! I just can't say enough about these small tykes, b.k.a. CAVS 8U. It's always amazing to me how legs and arms that little (some just 6/7 years old) can handle a fast-dribbling ball effortlessly across a full court like nobody's business. They're not just small; they're accurate. Talented. They hustle hard on defense, give all they've got on offense and win championships.
Where was this stuff when we were little?
******Check out what CAVS 8U coach Scott Wigton had to say when CAVS 8U swept the Reno Jam On It AAU Memorial Day Tourney, May 28th-30th:
CAVS 8U Champions of the World’s Largest AAU Basketball Tournament Reno Jam-On-It - By Scott Wigton
This young group had been preparing 2 months for this tournament. Well, they were prepared and ready to play “CAVS basketball”. After many parents drove 8-10 hours for this event, the team started playing early Saturday morning.
The first game was against Oakland Rebels; we knew this would be a difficult opponent and our kids had to play good defense. It started with good defense and rebounds by A.J. Roberson. On the offensive end; Jason Gerald made a key fast-break assist to Jayce McDonald. Cheyenne Aldridge was a tough player by tying up the ball against the Rebels through-out the game. Player of this game was AJ Roberson.
Final Score: CAVS 29, Oakland Rebels 20.
The second game on Saturday was against a team from Northern California NBBA. We scored early and often, the group from the bench played extremely good defense. We held this team scoreless the 1st half. Dylan Metoyer played very well with good defense and offense. Brody Chouinard ran point guard with many good passes through-out this game. We told the young 8U players to be always ready to play we never know what may come up!! Final Score: CAVS 29, NBBA 2. On to the semi finals!!
When the young CAVS woke up Sunday morning there was snow on the ground. Yes, two days before June snow was present in Reno . Even though it was cold outside the CAVS were playing hot. Since we won the first 2 games, the team automatically jumped to the semi finals. The next team was the host, Jam-On-It. From the start this would be a difficult game. The CAVS were playing against 2 opponents, Jam- on-It and the referees. With 4 minutes into the game, the CAVS had “committed” 11 fouls and Jam-On-It was shooting free throws for the rest of the 1st half. Also many players were in foul trouble the entire game. Thus, the young players had to come-in and play hard.
Isaiah Matallana, Cheyenne , and Jayce McDonald helped out with good defense and excellent play. Bryce Wigton played very well this game since most of the starting five were on the bench in foul trouble. He made key baskets at the end to pull away from Jam-On-It. This game took an hour and half to play. Well done CAVS; on to the finals!! Final Score: CAVS 50, Jam On It 31.
The Championship game was against Oakland Rebels. David Ortiz and Toney Mays had very good game in this match up. The CAVS sagged back on defense except David played pressure defense with Oakland’s best player. Toney “Buckets” Mays had many key baskets and these two players lead the CAVS to a victory. The game was close at half time but the CAVS pulled away in the second half, with very good defense Final Score: CAVS 44, Oakland Rebels 33.
Congratulations CAVS!! The hard work paid off!! GO CAVS 8U!!!
NEXT STOP FOR 8U....
